Introducing Stepney Workers Club

We are delighted to welcome Stepney Workers Club to Always in Colour. The East London brand are producing a modern take on the classic vulc trainer that really caught our attention and imagination as soon as we saw them.

Still run at its core as a duo, we spoke to head of brand Simon See about balancing the hype. "We are not fashion... we just wanted to do vulc sneakers in a way that no one else was doing them." Only formally launching in 2018, the awareness and momentum has been rapid. Although picked up by HYPEBEAST et al as ones to watch, their feet are firmly grounded in the culture that they have built, in many ways the antithesis of hype. "It's all been organic, it just goes where it goes and anything else would just feel embarrassing to us." The duo have used their size to date to their benefit, following their instincts without unnecessarily overthinking things. "Bedroom brands are really interesting right now, they just have more personality, there are no limitations. You can go all out, there is looseness and freedom". That freedom also includes a fast turn around and trusting impulses. Working with a small crew of trusted heads (including photographer Alec Mcleish), the lookbooks are predominantly film shot and are likely to be released as soon as the film is developed, the right images will always just pop. "There is a lot of authenticity to what we're doing, we hope, it's certainly coming from a place of documenting and presenting what has inspired us... it's quite working class in that way."

This new AW18 drop is inspired by British Speedway. We're talking tracksuits, motorbikes and core colours, not Gatorade, beer coolers and NASCAR. Again linking to the brand's core ideologies of inclusiveness and community, the speedway throwback pulls in an amateur element, competitive but community. The Dellow silhouette, a timeless vulcanised sneaker in cotton drill canvas, is available in classic black and white editions alongside new dust yellow and blues, all with the stand out high-wall foxings and contrasting heel stripes (the yellow edition has a black stripe that is right out of the 'Enter The Dragon' kit). The pack also includes their first full print, a collage of old speedway magazines. "We bought a whole stack of them and just found pieces that resonated, but mostly the vibrant colours."

With autumnal hairy suedes, woven house Jacquard fabric and premium leather versions all still due to land this year, Stepney Workers Club have set out their stall and they're finding new space in the classic vulc. "It's been easy for us so far you know, we're all from the same era, we loved the same bands, loved the same art... it's fun and it's still about passion."
